Is your company already located here but you are thinking of moving to a new facility? Are you planning to locate a new plant in Burlington? BEDC can help. Our Lean, Green & Connected (LGC) project will give you new insights on how change in advanced manufacturing with its emerging focus on ideas, innovation and customer value is shaping the built industrial environment in Burlington…and around the world.
Innovation in construction and retrofits that incorporate state-of-the-art industrial design features not only attract new advanced manufacturing investment: these design features can enhance your productivity and efficiency – at each stage of your company’s growth With the technical support of our Design Team: KNY Architects and MMM Group Consulting Engineers, the LGC project examines the impact of three major design trends on the future of industrial buildings:
Lean:. New “lean” advanced manufacturing processes demand increased flexibility to produce customized high value added products. New knowledge workers at the shop floor level blur traditional divides between office and production space.
Green: The worldwide green building trend continues to expand from residential to industrial construction. as governments introduce incentives to spur sustainable building practices. For Burlington, a key consideration for manufacturers will be the need to meet emerging energy conservation targets established under the province’s Long-Term Energy Plan and mandated under the Green Energy Act.
Connected: Smart buildings of the future employ intelligent building design and technologies throughout: use of high-speed broadband, wireless and the Internet “cloud” in building design, construction and operations.
LGC Final Report:What makes for innovative building design? Why are certain model industrial designs innovative? What lessons can we draw fro these designs going forward? Where is the future for Burlington – new build or retrofit and why? Click here to download.
Design Portfolio: Of special interest to manufacturers, developers, landlords and those involved with industrial buildings at a technical level, the Design Portfolio contains narrative, rendering with site details, architectural plans, engineering specifications for each of five model designs – three for new build designs and two case studies for retrofitting existing plants.

Financial Feasibility Study:Interested in just how much innovative designs may cost? This study undertakes a cost comparison with current building models to determine the extent of the cost premium for each of the proposed new design models. Bottom-Line: 3% to 10% of construction costs for new build and retrofits – less than you might think given the potential downstream operating cost savings. Click here to download.
